Handy(wo)man challenge, 2008

This is the “before” and “after”. The before is the fence boards on the far left… I had to tear ‘em apart and then remove the nails and well, I ended up with a pile of old, cracked wood. I didn’t want to burn the wood or toss it so I thought maybe we could recycle what we could instead of wasting it. I am beginning to really practise the belief of recycling… not just for the good of our lands but because it’s our duty to…. so do your part!

So, here’s the handy man competitors…

It’s Martin a.k.a., “Rocky Balboa” is in the left corner wearing the black shorts!

And his competitor, Angela, A.K.A. “Million Dollar Baby” is in the right corner wearing the… black shorts!

Chop chop till it drops!

And Angela wins, with the prize of a… block of wood!!!!!!!!!!!!!

(We’re low-budget, okay?)

Bang bang some nails….

Okay, don’t knock it’s ugliness, okay? It’s a gonna be painted white and it’s going to hold some rocks and soil and some really tasty veggies and that’s all that matters, right????

Yea, so - in reality, Martin finished his as I arrived home from a very, long day sitting outside getting burnt by the sun as I played in a band… and well, he did the design work, I just helped and really… we’re both winners… he did try very hard to persuade me that he was in the winner since he designed but I rained on his parade and said there’s no winners… just two sexy garden boxes that’s going to hold some tasty vegetables. Should I let him think he won? I mean, he did give two thumbs up at the end….

Grass is a growin’!

Progress on the homefront as we got some news to update!

  1. Our grass is growing on the yard area we worked on about 10 days ago or so! Rock on! I think it was a bit too cool for the grass to grow as we went through a bit of a cool spell so the last two or three days has really allowed the seeds to germinate! Grow seeds, grow!
  2. We finished off the fence… well, not totally but as good as it’s going to be for now. We still need to put the lattice up but first, one must buy lattice. And one must also buy a few more pieces of 2×4x8’s and oh yea, some more screws and maybe a gallon or four of paint! Yea, cha-ching, cha-ching, it’s a bit costly especially when your lazy-arsed neighbour grills on their great-big honkin’ Hank Hill BBQ and refuses to help you out. I think we should paint it bright pink — both sides! Yea, ’cause I’m THAT nice!
  3. Martin’s finger healed pretty good after his wasp-sting but today we discovered a whole bunch of wasps in our shed. Uh huh. Ya wanna know how they got in? Through the roof rafters. Yes, the same roof-rafters I said needed to be enclosed in to prevent such bugs with big butts from getting into the shed. Guess what our next project is? Indeed! Building some rafters and perhaps siliconing some corners… and well - yea! I want to avoid saying I told you so, so I won’t.  But… Nahhh, I’m bigger than that.
  4. I told you so!
  5. Our own little handy-man challenge! It’ll be taking place tomorrow, Sunday May 25, 2008. The best planter made will determine the winner! I need some planter boxes made for my vegetable garden because it’s just too sandy here to plant things so I will just stick ‘em into big ol’ planter boxes. So Martin will be makin’ his and I will be makin’ mine and let the best planter determine who truly is the handiest-man around the house is… oh yea, and you know who will be the winner, eh?? The photos will reveal the real winner!  Stay tuned!  Oh but - I forgot to tell you! There’s a catch! The catch is, we can only use old wood recycled from an old fence that I tackled today by recycling it. We aren’t going to a store to purchase new materials — just using what we have around the place already! There’s a lot reasons why I decided to do that but I will explain it in another post. It comes from a few things including the watching of a show which talks about repurposing materials so that our gardens are more ‘green’. Plus, it ain’t cool burning or tossing a bunch of wood that we can find a new use for.

That’s it for now. It’s past midnight and I have an engagement tomorrow at 1:00 I have to get ready for! Toodles!

Raindrops keep falling on our heads!

I’d like to introduce you to Mr. and Mrs. Paul C!

Despite the outdoor wedding cancellation and marrying inside the hall, the day is was still perfect in almost every way!

Beautiful rings for a promising future….

Rain stopped just long enough for some couples photos….

Hey baby! Wouldja be my wifey????

But,  more seriously….

The money shot!

Hey! Can you believe she married me?????

These photos are mostly ones I took but Martin took some great ones too… actually, the ones of Paul carrying his bride he took :)

When we get the final album done, I’ll find a few more!

Bad taste photos

Remember that girl who recently was found locked up in Austria in her father’s basement? He kept her in a dungeon for like, 25 years and she had a bunch of his kids because well - he’s a freak.

This is a photo I saw a few weeks ago, photographed by the AP I believe.

It’s a photo of the house where she was kept in a dungeon.

In case your German ist nicht sehr gut… er, is not very good…  zimmer frei means, “Free room” or — a room for rent.

Nice.

Landscaping an ugly corner

Ya know, we’re suckers for punishment. My dad brought up a bunch of soil last year and we ended up spreading it over this area which had really poor grass coverage and was just an unused portion of our yard which you can see from the road and was butt-ugly.

Well, we bought some stones for a walkway the other day (and we need another 50 so we haven’t started to work on that yet)… but while in North Bay yesterday I found some of these globe bushes  which Martin was really wanting. The cost here was $60 each but where I went yesterday they were only $21 each. MUCH cheaper. So I got three plus a little spreading Juniper bush…. got home, and we planted them right away. Well, we were going to give it some time to decide what we were going to do design-wise there but I got home from work today and found Martin laying out some border around the trees. It took us two hours but we finally got something that we’re some-what happy with. It’s not perfect but with the material we had to work with (those gray border things), it wasn’t bad. Those things are SO annoying and never again will I get them. However, they are the same colour as our paving stones so it’s going to look cohesive when we finally get the pathway down.

The pathway are these stones (pictured below!) which we will do this pattern… a row of four, a row of three, a row of four, a row of three…. and it’s going to be starting from the fence (the upper left corner of the pic also below) down to our driveway which is about 20-22 feet long. Tonight we also started the grass seeds so hopefully in a week or two we’re going to have cute little grass growing which will complete the design we’re going for. Martin then bought some nice red cedar chips (which we’ve also used in the front yard previously) and look pretty sharp against the wood fencing, our beige and dark brown house and really brings the bush’s colour out too.

Those little globe bushes will eventually spread out to 1 metre diameter or so and will probably double in size this summer. The juniper will spread out quite a bit and double in its size too this year… eventually ending up at about 2 metres diameter which will fill out that area nicely. However, we are contemplating finding a taller tree to go in the corner and moving that little bush to somewhere else… It’ll just look more visually appealing. It’ll probably be another cedar but more of a cone-shaped. Yea, it’s going to look very fallic, I know…. but not ALL of us are pervs, okay?? :P So get your mind out of the gutter!

Finished fences make good neighbours

We have ourselves some very interesting neighbours. My luck is they’d find this blog and discover what I write about them so I’ll use just nice, friendly words. Pretty much they like to keep up with the Jones (and oddly enough, our last name is NOT the Jone’s but you would think it was)…  we built our cute little shed last year ’cause we needed one. And she came over and said, “ohh, you’ve got a little 8×10 shed! Well, when R gets back from Afghanistan, we’re going to build a 12×12x12.” Sure enough as there is a hell (and I’m pretty sure there’s a hell), within a week of him being home, up goes this gigantic crappy looking shed which overshadows ours. This is the same woman who just months before couldn’t afford a new fridge and stove and practically got free, almost-new ones from one of Martin’s co-workers when they got transferred out of the area. Then that same week there was a newish boat in the yard. And then a newish camper trailer. And then a newish (or new!) trampoline. What the hell? And, just a few months before that she was like, “Your fence around your pool is really gross, couldn’t the old owners put up something else?” Well, last summer we lost our pool during a huge storm so it was replaced and had a nice new fence on it. “Well, that is MUCH better!” Yea, I told her, that fence? Cost $1000 to put up. “Really?” she said, “How much for the entire pool?” About $9000. “Ohhhhhh…”

You could tell she was adding up the figures in her head, wondering how big of a pool she could afford. Listen chickie, our pool is 25 foot diameter, you can’t GET bigger pools than that, unless you put an inground one. So, just STOP calculating how you can OUTDO us. Puh-lease!

So, the last 20 feet of the fence separating “us” from “them” was left undone the past few years. I had enough of this ugly eye-sore (and enough of HER yelling at her kids to get away from the fence because our dog was looking at her kids, as if my dog had freakin’ rabies or something). So, thank the Lord I’ve been in school the last year and had a nice little return come back to us. Not a lot but enough to cover the cost of lumber.

It’s time to bring out the hammers!

Thankfully today was a bloody gorgeous day here. We had a good 20-25c weather, wonderful sun and not nearly enough sunblock pre-applied because I’ve turned into a lobster girl. Totally.

(Above) Ahhh, yes - the unfinished fence! How ugly. And see that ugly-ass shed on the other side? Compared to our cute little one? My other neighbour (Maggie) commented today that our shed looks way better than theirs. “Yea,” I told her, “We don’t start something that we can’t finish.” C’mon, get two cans of paint and two hours of your day and just finish painting your ugly mammoth shed. (Oh, did I forget to mention they have like, a 30×50 double-car garage and shed/woodworking building? On top of this ugly thing?)

Martin checking out things. Will the wood we got be the same height????……

 100_2789.jpg

Mmmm… just THAT much off. Good thing we got some extra planks, we took those old ones there off and put up new ones. We ended up with just ONE extra fence board in the end. Oh yea, I am *THAT* good at estimating boards WITH contingency. Oh yea. I am THAT good.

100_2792.jpg

First of the 3.5 sections done. AND - it is straight AND level. The rest of the fence (the old stuff previously done) is seriously crooked. But - ours? looks FAB. We got that first section done in less than 20 minutes. We worked as a team, measured, helped each other out despite a shakey start at the beginning where *someone* wanted to keep up the old chainlink behind the new fenceboards. I said no, they go. Guess who won? (Er, not that I’m keeping tabs). Seriously though, despite little things like that, we work really good together. We both have quiet personalities with a stubborn streak… however, we always work through it, use it as something to make our relationship even stronger.  And, when you work together? You really DO get things done faster!

100_2794.jpg

Finished! Yes, I realise we still need to get the 2×4x8s up on top, and the lattice but - we ran into some unexpected problems. (Yea, I’m GOOD but not THAT good)… the old base of the fence that we thought were there, WERE there but - was almost six inches down beneath the soil and started to rot. That’s okay though, we got the planks up and that’s an excellent start. We’re going to get some more wood tomorrow (if we can find somewhere open) and then maybe get the lattice and other toppers off… then cut off the tops of the post when that is done, and then do some painting ’cause there’s a few years difference in colour for the wood. I don’t know if I would do blue (as the fence in the back is, that’s our other neighbour and still our yard back there, all the way to the tree line!) or - do some brown paint or something. It’s too bad the wood wasn’t all the same colour, or else we’d put a really nice stain on it… too bad.

The woman came up and said, “My, aren’t you guys ambitious today!” I’m thinking, why doesn’t your lazy-ass husband come and offer to help us out? ”Yea, we got our refund back and thought we’d finish this off….” She replied, “Oh, must be nice to get a refund back.” I retorted back, “Well, I spent the last 12 months being in school full-time, that’s why we got something back.” It’s always about the money, isn’t it?

And, while talking to maggie, she joked and said her husband said this: “Funny thing – Angela and Martin bought and paid for and are building THEIR fence?”

Seriously. That unfinished fence is HER fence. $200 smackaroos later, my only regret is that we couldn’t build it 10 feet higher. Best $200 bucks EVER spent. Hu-rah! But - we’re happy our dog can go in the back and not have some overbearing mom yell at her kids because our dog glances at them.

It was cute, the little girl came up to the fence and said, “What are you doing?” Building a fence! “Does this mean when our ball goes over, we’ll never see it again?” No worries little girl, you’ll get your ball back :)

Some more art stuff…

Just felt like drawing tonight so I practised with the crayons :)

I went from the start to finish taking a pic every now and again. I know that the eyes and notes aren’t quite there but - it’s just a practise! Eventually I’ll be as good as the ol’ Mister Crayola himself!

start to finish!

Could you do this?

Every now and again I stumble upon something that is really cool. Like this guy, Mr. Crayola… amazing, this guy does such spectacular work with the medium of crayon!

So, could you do this?

Or this? (it’s a bit boring the first 30 seconds, it gets better…)

Check out his site.. http://www.themastercrayonartist.biz

Anyways - just for fun the other day, I had a somewhat cooperative cat model and decided to give it a try myself.
cat.jpg

Sorry it’s not brighter and clearer, the light in here isn’t good tonight and the reflection from the flash was rather distracting.

It actually was much easier than I thought it would be and was surprised at how good it turned out. It’s not as great as Mr. Crayola but - heck! It’s definitely something I would like to explore a bit more!

The Dress :D

Okay, I am weak… I’ve caved. Here are some pics… but - to sort of “hide” them a bit, ya gotta click on the “more”, okay? Read more…

Blood Diamonds!

Believe it or not (and I still don’t)… a miracle happened today. While shopping I had to make a quick trip to the little girl’s room (OMG, I can’t believe I actually wrote it that way, I always think people are weird when they say that — however, it just sounds much more diplomatic than saying, While I was at the crapper…)…. Martin stayed out (obviously). I joked, “Hey! You can go into there (pointing to jewelry store) to buy my wedding ring when I’m gone!”

See? He’s thus far been afraid to move forward in that avenue though we’re pretty strong as a couple. But - we had a really great conversation last night and did a bit of bonding in that we are sure we want to spend the rest of our lives together.

So, imagine my surprise when I came out and he’s lookin’ at them! And no blood had to be shed to get him into there! (no blood diamonds for us!) After almost half an hour of looking, we had a good idea of what we liked and didn’t like. I don’t like glam. I like simplicity. He likes big rings and in gold colour because of his skin complexion and the size of his fingers. I like white gold.   We managed to look at two rings we both like… I like them but am not in love with them. But - I wouldn’t mind them. We got some prices and since my very amazing, childhood friend Shelly has been so kind enough to lend me her wedding dress, we shouldn’t feel bad about buying rings that are nice. Both of these rings came up to about $1000 which includes an insurance and a lifetime of resizing… anything that damaged the rings, or wore them through or anything, it would be covered. Not bad, eh? And I don’t think (realistically) spending $1000 on a set of rings is super extravagent. Honestly, these days I don’t think you could get anything much cheaper than that!

We aren’t getting married until August, 2009 so no big rush to get the rings yet!

Now - the wedding dress! I forgot to tell you that Shelly and I got together and she is lending me her dress. I am much bigger than she is but by miracle of miracles, it fit! We have decided to dub the dress, the Sisterhood of the Travelling Wedding Dress because it seemed to fit each of us perfectly despite having a totally different body shape.  I took some pics of it and it actually looks very beautiful. I don’t want to post the pics yet ’cause - I want the day to be truly special and part of that is the pics that we will post of it… if you want to see it, leave a message and I’ll send ‘em to you by email.

It’s so nice to talk to Martin about it and to see him excited and looking forward to it… it makes me feel really good :)
